New Year, same birds

Short blog post from a tour around the area today with a break in the middle.

Hesketh this morning held a single Bewick’s swan in the Whoopers, a calling Spotted Red flying over the West, the 1cy male Hen Harrier hunting the inland fields and the American Wigeon did the decent thing and showed well on the 1st pool on the East side.

Other highlights were 2 Peregrine, 2 Merlin, Marsh Harrier, Barn Owl, Stonechat and the usual flock of Tree Sparrow.

Later on in the day at Marshside, I spent an hour or so waiting for the Tundra Bean to come off the saltmarsh to drink on Rimmers, but unfortunately it never did. I did see a Chiffchaff (sadly just a “normal” one), 2 Knot and a Dunlin in a flock of 500 Redshank that dropped in for a few minutes, the 1w drake Scaup, female Hen Harrier, GWE, decent size flock of Twite out by the marsh edge, ad Greenland Whitefront and 3 Barnacles.

Just inputted the birds on Bubo and it came to 78 species in total. Not bad seeing as I wasn’t really listing – concentrating on trying to find more scarce wildfowl. I’ve not even seen things like Blue and Great Tit…..
